September 2025- Mudd Minute
Legacy and Continued Learning
by Becky Mudd, Executive Director
In 1934, the world was full of change, innovation, and momentum. Across the country: Alcatraz officially became a federal prison. The first U.S. ski tow (rope) began operating in Woodstock, Vermont. The very first high school auto driving course was offered in State College, Pennsylvania. Donald Duck made his cartoon debut. President Franklin D. Roosevelt became the first sitting U.S. president to travel through the Panama Canal. In the world of sports, America was as passionate as ever: Babe Ruth hit his 700th career home run against Detroit, the Chicago Bears edged out the Detroit Lions 19-16 in the first NFL game to be broadcast nationally and soccer, hockey, and baseball continued to grow in popularity and professionalism.
And here in Colorado... something special was beginning.
A group of visionary coaches came together with a clear purpose: to uplift and support the coaching profession in our state. They founded what is now the Colorado High School Coaches Association (CHSCA)—not to regulate or politicize, but to professionalize coaching, recognize excellence, and promote high school athletics through collaboration and shared purpose. They crafted a constitution that emphasized education, connection, and celebration. And their vision still guides us today.
One of the most important values we carry forward from our founders is a commitment to lifelong learning. Whether you're a first-year coach or a seasoned veteran, there is always room to grow. Whether it's dialing in the X's and O's of your sport, building a culture of accountability, or integrating mental performance strategies, growth is essential. And yes—there will be setbacks, failures, and growing pains. But growth is the path forward.
As we begin this new year in CHSCA, let me suggest three powerful ways to keep learning:
1. READ--If you’ve never incorporated regular reading into your coaching routine, start small. Read a chapter, a few pages, or even a single article. The act of reading will challenge your thinking, remind you that you’re not alone, and give you tools and mindsets to take back to your team.
This past summer, my reading list included:
· The 7 Commitments of a Great Team -Jon Gordon
· The Strong Leader’s Hand- Daniel York
· The Blue Team- Peter Young
· Calling Up- JP Nerbun
Reading has encouraged me as well as opened my eyes to new ways of teaching, leading, and connecting with athletes—and I believe it can do the same for you.
2. ATTEND CLINICS & TRAININGS--It never fails to impress me: the most successful and respected coaches are often the ones sitting in the front row at clinics, notebook in hand, still hungry to learn.
There’s a clear connection between continued learning and sustained success. Clinics provide not only tactical insights but also the chance to hear how other coaches problem-solve, motivate, and innovate.
If you haven’t been to one in a while, make this the year you show up.
3. CONNECT--Some of the most important moments in my coaching journey came because another coach reached out, included me, or simply encouraged me.
In my first years as a Head Coach it was because of OTHER COACHES that I started to learn and grow- they welcomed me into their conversations and helped me find my footing. In basketball, coaches from across the state have become trusted colleagues and friends. We’ve competed fiercely, collaborated often, and supported each other through the highs and lows. So CONNECT! Find your people. Be someone else's support. That’s how we all get better.
As we kick off another school year, CHSCA is here for you. Our Board is full of experienced, passionate coaches who are committed to helping you thrive. Please don’t hesitate to reach out—with questions, concerns, ideas, or celebrations. We want to hear from you.
Here’s to a year of growth, excellence, and carrying the legacy forward.
